Galaxy Zoo!
Some of you know this about me, others don't, but I used to think I was going to be an astronomer. And I still find astronomy absolutely, breathtakingly amazing. I just can't do the math. Stupid numbers! Still, it's always been something I've loved, being able to look at pictures of the universe and nebulae and quasars and galaxies and so forth. I took astronomy for one of my science courses at CSU not because it was supposed to be really easy (it was, but that's beside the point), but because I just love astronomy. I can remember sitting in class and literally finding myself breathless at the images we saw. Space is just the coolest thing ever. Some people, like my mom, find the glory of God in the complexity of biology or chemistry. Some find it in tracing human history. I can never look at the sky, let alone images of such spectacular phenomena as are found in the deep reaches of space, without my heart nearly bursting with the recognition of the hand of God. Look at what he has done! And to see all that, those thousands of astoundingly, fantastically beautiful, glorious galaxies, and to know he loves me better than any of them-- I don't even know what to do with that. But boy is it a great feeling.
So imagine my delight when I discovered Galaxy Zoo, where I can still do the astronomy stuff, have my breath stolen as often as I like by images of galaxies further away than I can even fathom, and I don't have to do math. Just classify galaxies. I think I've just found my new favorite way to kill time! ^.^
